KDS (Karate-do Shotokai) is non-competitive martial art that can be practiced by people of almost all ages and abilities. It is a classical martial art and self-defense method as opposed to sport karate or fighting.
KDS-Canada is lead by Clarence Whynot, 5th Dan, who has 40+ years of experience. His club is located in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. For more information on the KDS-Canada clubs and instructors go to the "Clubs" page (see link above). We follow the method of Master Mitsusuke Harada, who began his training in Tokyo in the early 1940s at the orginal Shotokan Dojo under Gichen Funikoshi and other recognized masters of the time. Sadly, Harada Sensei passed away in 2021 but continued to train right up to shortly before his death. We continue to follow his methods to the best of our ability. KDS-Canada classes are interesting and challenging. Our goal is to work together to improve the skills of ourselves and others in the class. Instead of doing a lot of free-sparring, we tend to favour using pre-arranged types of partner practices using strong, determined attacks and learning how to handle them effectively. Unlike most styles of karate the movements are smooth and fluid with an emphasis on learning to use relaxed power. As in any physical activity minor injuries can happen but they are quite rare. If you are seeking an interesting and engaging martial art for yourself or your child we would invite you to come to a class. Go to the "Clubs" link above to find a club and contact information. KDS Karate is an excellent fitness activity, both physically and mentally. |
